Creators Ignacio Manzano, Pablo Luna, Paulo Veiga, and Nicolas Damonte decided to collaborate on a tool for mind mapping.
WiseMapping uses scalable vector graphics technology rather than a Flash based plug-in so that it works on most systems. The wisemapping interface is not as visually appealing as some of the other mind mapping tools available. It is not collaborative and not particularly intuitive to use. There is little here that cannot be found in other, similar applications.
The short introduction video provides basic information to get started with the application. The interface is not as intuitive as some of the other mind mapping applications. A first steps tutorial is helpful, but the interface is not as user friendly as it could be. The desktop workspace is somewhat cluttered looking and the graph-paper background is distracting.
Wisemapping can be used in Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, and Opera. It will not function in Google Chrome or other browsers.
Icons and font attributes are limited with no numbers in the icon tray and only three available font choices. Options are available for adding notes and hyperlinks to nodes as well as altering the color and shape of each node.
Registration requires an email, username, first and last names, password and word verification. A confirmation email with activation link is sent and must be used before logging in.
Wisemapping is completely free to use.
Users who wish to create mind maps for problem solving or brainstorming purposes may find this program useful. Anyone with needs beyond very basic mind mapping should explore other available options.
